In Loving Memory of Our Dad & Poppy

The History of Knead Bread LLC

This family-owned and operated business was inspired by our father, Damiano Mazzone, 1st generation Italian who arrived in this country, @Ellis Island, on September 15, 1937. He, along with his mother and father & four sisters became residents of Brooklyn, NY. The family continued to cultivate their “italian culture” at home and extended the warmth of their love of “Breaking Bread” as a true tradition, a “marking of sorts” of family and friendship. To escape the hectic city life, Damiano was a lover of nature and the outdoors. He was able to venture outside the city to the Catskill Mountains, in Hudson Valley and eventually after many years was able to make that area home for him and his growing family.

The Knead Bread business started in 2018, as a wholesale home based garage location. This business was a dream of our father and brothers, influenced by both parents who had always been the most hospitable people. Everyone would always remember and comment on their passion for food, always fresh rustic bread and their love of people.  The Original “foodies”, they would say!  Upon Damiano’s retirement, he continued to nurture his love for home grown (organic), home-made foods and breads. He practiced his talent for bread making in his later years in life, and taught his sons and groomed their natural artistic talents for this form of artisan bread-making.

Welcome to the brick and mortar location of KNEAD BREAD, in the heart of Winchester, VA. This location was a great fit for the Mazzone family to grow our wholesale business of bread production into a bread artisan bakery & cafe.  The family has a love of the mountains, and the small town feel that Winchester offers. We are excited to offer our breads, and sweets for retail sales along with a very unique form of fresh, made to order breakfast sandwiches and small lunch bites for an early crowd.

Our products will never be frozen or pre-made. It will always be fresh and made to order. It will focus on some of our favorites as children and growing-up in an Italian-American household. Once you taste our creations, you will be hooked. Our goal is to source as much product locally with the highest quality, even to the cup of coffee you can certainly enjoy, with out of the oven, fresh baked breads and other eatery surprises.

It’s in his loving memory that his family has decided to take his passion to the next level to remember his love of bread. A family meal was never without bread and we hope you will join us in sharing the tradition.
